Frequent Questions

How do I place my order?

You can place your order with us when you email us for a quote, or use the form on our Contact page. Email is the best form of communication since it ensures information doesn't get lost in translation. When emailing us, please provide the following information:
  • Your contact info
  • Desired flavors, fillings, etc.
  • Pictures of ideas + desired color scheme
  • How many guests attending
  • Name of person celebrated
  • Wording of any messages
  • Any other order details that you feel are pertinent

What are your prices?

Pricing is based on many factors: cake size, complexity of shape and design, the number of guests, etc. If you email us for a quote we will be glad to give you a custom price tailored to your order. Please see our Prices menu for more details.

Is there a minimum order?

The minimum order for cupcakes is $36 (24 if you are only ordering cupcakes, 48 if you are ordering mini-cupcakes). However, if you are adding cupcakes onto a cake order, we can be flexible.  The minimum order for cakes is $50.

How many cake/cupcake flavors can I choose for one order?

You may choose as many flavors as you want for your order. For a tier cake, you might like to make each tier a different flavor. However, because making another cake flavor also means preparing different frostings and fillings as well, the time to prepare additional recipes adds up when you choose more than one flavor for an order. It is more efficient to multiply one recipe than to make many small batches of different recipes, cleaning the equipment in between. This is why there is an additional $5 charge for every additional flavor you choose.

Can you make character cakes (Disney, sports logo, designer brands etc)?

Reproduction of copyrighted characters/images without permission is a violation of federal copyright law. Unless you have a written permit from the copyrighted holder, we will not be able to reproduce a copyrighted image on a cake. We are very creative and can still find a design that fits your theme, even without a literal reproduction of your favorite character or logo.

I'm not sure what I want. Can you make me a sketch?

We are more than happy to brainstorm ideas and create a rough pencil sketch for you. If you need more help to visualize what you want, look around the internet -- there are literally tens of thousands of cake pictures out there!  It is very helpful to send us a photo of your inspiration.  Keep in mind that we respect the artistry of others, so we don't like to be copycats!  Please allow us to customize your cake to suit your needs and create something unique.

Do you have a store front?

We do not have a store front yet. Mission City Cakes is a home-based cake business in Santa Clara, CA.

Is it legal to have a home food business in California?

Yes. as of January 1, 2013, the California Homemade Food Act-AB1616 went into effect that allows sales of non-potentially hazardous foods from private homes. Mission City Cakes is a licensed and a legal cottage food operation.

Do you offer tastings?

Yes. For weddings only, we hold tastings in our Santa Clara home. You may bring up to four people to taste up to three different flavors for free. For larger groups or more flavors, we will negotiate a fee for the tasting. At this meeting you may also explore your options for wedding cake designs and structure. Please allow a few weeks from your initial inquiry to allow time to prepare these flavors for you and find a time to meet for your tasting.

Is there a contract I have to sign?

For weddings, your completed estimate functions as our contract. You will receive a printed copy at our tasting, at which time you will reserve the date and provide a rough estimate of the number of guests you are expecting.

How much notice do you need for an order?

orders are taken on a first come, first serve basis. we recommend that you book your order as early as possible. for weddings, sculpted cakes, or orders $300 and up, at least 4 weeks. For orders less than $300, we need at least 2 weeks. we might accommodate last minute orders depending on our schedule. Check the availability calendar on the Contact page of our website.

Can you use fresh flowers on the cake?

Fresh flowers are not a food product, and may contain pesticides, insects, dirt, or other contaminants. Florists often use things like special flower spikes to keep greenery from coming into physical contact with a cake. We will not place fresh flowers on a cake, but if you like, you may ask your florist to do this. We recommend only trying this with fondant-covered cakes.

Do you provide cake or cupcake stands?

Yes, you may borrow any of my cake or cupcake stands. I will take a deposit for the full replacement value of the stand, which will be returned to you when I receive the stand back from you after your event in its original condition.  Notes that all cakes will be delivered to you on a covered cake board -- this is often necessary as the base of the support system for tiered cakes.

Can you make gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free, or vegan cake?

Yes. Mission City Cakes offers recipes that leave out allergens such as wheat flour, nuts, eggs, or dairy, but does not bake in an allergen-free kitchen. All our products are clearly labeled with ingredients, and the labels call out specific allergens. Please note that the stringent requirements of the Department of Public Health do not permit us to label any product as "gluten-free", even if it contains no wheat or other gluten. We do not recommend serving anyone with celiac disease. We are careful and operate with clean equipment when making these special recipes, but all ingredients are stored in a kitchen that does also use wheat, soy, gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, and egg. Bear in mind your or your guests' level of sensitivity to these ingredients. We have pleased many clients with food allergies and restrictions in the past, so if this is a concern to you, by all means let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.
